How many times have our parents told us what to do sternly or spanked us when we were children, not knowing how the impact of their words or actions made us feel? Our young children go through a lot in their environment outside the home and seek solace from their parents. There is nothing wrong with disciplining our children, but when discipline becomes the household theme, the house is no longer a home; it is a cold, emotionless facility that provides food and shelter without love. I am saying that the style of discipline we use as parents can ultimately affect our child’s development positively or negatively.

A Quick Guide to Being a Girl Dad:
How to create an everlasting bond with your daughter

By Madeline Anderson, Author of Girl Dad
#girldad #fatherswithdaughters #fatherdaughterbond

The first step to becoming a Girl Dad is about as simple as it gets: brand yourself as a Girl Dad. When it comes to setting goals and changing habits in your life, one of the best pieces of advice is to start referring to yourself as whatever you aim to be. If you want to start getting up earlier and making the most of your mornings, start referring to yourself as a morning person. If you decide you want to write a book as a side project, call yourself an author. Label yourself as a photographer if you have a passion for taking photos and want to make a career out of it.

When you brand yourself with a certain title or as a type of person, you effectively become that brand. You will be surprised at how quickly you start making decisions that fit into the wheelhouse of the brand you are working to identify as. The activity follows identity. Once you begin to see yourself as a Girl Dad, you'll find it easier to do Girl Dad things. They start to become automatic, like prioritizing time with your daughter.

As a Girl Dad, you have the power to lay the foundation for an incredible relationship with your daughter. By understanding what she truly wants - to feel worthy, special, and loved - you can take intentional actions to make her feel this way. It all starts with knowing your daughter well and finding ways to make her feel valued and appreciated. Take a moment to put yourself in her shoes and see the world from her perspective. Help her realize how unique and capable she is, and make sure she knows just how much you love her. With your guidance and support, the sky is truly the limit for what your daughter can achieve.
If you are ready to dive into some examples of how you can help her feel worthy, loved, and special or discuss all the little things that have a positive, lasting impact, please join me at my workshop at the 25th International Families and Fathers Conference. As a father of a daughter, creating an everlasting bond with your little girl is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It's a journey that requires patience, love, and dedication, but the result is a beautiful and unbreakable connection that will last a lifetime.

WHEN YOU THINK YOU LOST EVERYTHING

When you feel like you're losing the strength to keep fighting, someone can always help you turn things around.

In April, Stanley Tucker, a retired conductor for Amtrak, asked me a question that left me feeling inspired. He asked if I knew the meaning of the word "jubilee" and spoke of the special jubilee of Fathers and Families Coalition of America. His words reminded me of the importance of this small yet global nonprofit, and the warm smile I imagined on his face from across the country filled me with hope. Stanley, Bruce Boyden, Phillipa Johnson, Judy Walker, Victor Berrelz, Carol Consentino, Ruth Eaton, and hundreds more have been loyal yearly volunteers for over two decades, and their dedication is truly inspiring.

INCLUDING MEN IN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Finding Strength In Imperfection

In 2023, I was asked as a featured speaker, keynote, and presenter about mental health's impacts on men at several national events. I want to share one of the training sessions (below) with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in partnership with the National Federation of Families to examine how we can include men in wellness programs. I believe everyone has moments in life where we are broken, and we discover how to explore new pathways to repair the cracks of brokenness through healing, resilience, and robustness. The recovery can be swift, or it can take years. Others never move beyond the chards of being broken and, thus, never heal. I use a few poems in the courses I am honored to teach. "My storehouse has burnt down; there is nothing to obstruct the moon."- Mizuta Masahide. By accepting the past, this poem glances at lessons I continuously learn. My journey in life has allowed me to get through many trials of life. I would never heal if I stayed in the essence of past injuries. Even More Beautiful - Even More Precious - Even More Resilient - Even More Present is a metaphor of Kintsugi that a funny experience reminded me of the mentoring of an 89-year-old veteran a few weeks ago. I listened like a young boy listening to his grandfather because of the wisdom he poured into me. One of the most significant barriers for men to access health care, we believe our natural strengths are that we can take care of anything, even if broken into thousands of pieces.

Too many amazing dads for generations never seek support, leaving a legacy of struggle.
