OAR Leadership Institute™ Activities & Impact
Motivation Goes Beyond Momentary Momentum. It Moves the Needle.
Welcome to the activities of the OAR Leadership Institute™. These are not simply exercises to complete. They are invitations to discover, reflect, develop, apply, lead and become.
Which would you rather be: the arrow or the target?
Let that sit with you.
From Momentum to Meaning. From Meaning to Movement.
A powerful moment can inspire us. Sustainable leadership asks what happens after the moment has passed. The OAR Leadership Institute™ is designed to move reflection toward application and application toward a leadership practice that can continue long after the training ends.
The OAR Is in Your Hands.
I have often used the image of a rowboat because leadership can feel exactly like that. We are moving across waters we cannot completely control. We may not always see the entire shoreline ahead. We make decisions, adjust our direction, learn from the people rowing beside us, and continue forward.
The activities on this page are individual strokes of that oar. No single activity defines the journey. Together, however, reflection, assessment, dialogue, practice and application can help us understand where we are, who we are becoming, and how we want to lead.
Leadership and Transcendence
One of the concepts that continues to influence my teaching comes from Viktor Frankl's exploration of meaning and self-transcendence: human development can move beyond simply asking what we want for ourselves toward considering meaning, responsibility, contribution and what our lives can offer beyond ourselves.
In leadership, that question becomes deeply practical: Who benefits because I became a healthier, more intentional, more responsible leader?
The Arrow or the Target?
One of the most requested activities in my training begins with that single question. I am not going to answer it for you here. That would defeat the purpose.
If you participate in one of my classes—or work through Unlocking Unlimited Potential: An Evidence-Informed Reference Manual and Activity Guide for Personal Growth, Family Systems, and Professional Development —you will encounter an activity built around processing that question for yourself.
Another activity that has stayed with participants asks us to consider the courage to lose sight of the shore. Sometimes growth requires movement before certainty. Sometimes leadership requires us to row beyond what is familiar while remaining anchored in purpose, values, responsibility and reflection.
The Activities Are Only Part of the Experience.
The OAR Leadership Institute™ combines structured learning, assessment, reflection and application through two complementary bodies of work. The Institute's I Am Going Anyway curriculum is organized through four leadership-development modules, while Unlocking Unlimited Potential extends the learning through four additional modules and fifteen guided activities for reflection and application.
Understanding Yourself
Behavioral insight, DiSC, self-awareness, strengths, relationships and leadership style.
Building Blocks of Success
Leadership values, character, self-leadership, responsibility and the foundations of success.
Developing a New Story
Positive goal setting, Ikigai-informed reflection, vision, purpose and leadership legacy.
Healthier Relationships
Emotional intelligence, awareness, response, relationships and leadership by love.
Two Manuals. Different Roles. One Developmental Journey.
The goal is not simply to attend a training. Participants need resources they can return to, write in, reflect upon and apply as their leadership continues to develop.
I Am Going Anyway — The OAR Leadership Institute Manual
This manual supports the structured OAR Leadership Institute™ learning experience and its four-module leadership-development process. Digital training materials are available within contracted OAR Leadership Institute experiences for participating organizations and individuals.
Unlocking Unlimited Potential: An Evidence-Informed Reference Manual and Activity Guide for Personal Growth, Family Systems, and Professional Development
This evidence-informed resource contains four modules and fifteen guided activities, with opportunities for journaling, self-reflection, assessment, relationships, personal growth, professional development and practical application.
It can be used beyond the classroom and carried forward as an ongoing resource for individual, family, practitioner, leadership and organizational learning.
More Than 40 Assessment and Reflective Learning Opportunities
Across the broader OAR Leadership Institute experience, participants encounter numerous assessment, reflection and application opportunities. Each serves a larger developmental purpose: helping participants move from insight toward intentional action.
Assessment is not the destination. A score does not develop a leader by itself. A diagram does not change behavior by itself. A journal prompt does not create transformation by itself. The value comes through guided interpretation, reflection, dialogue, practice, application and the willingness to do something meaningful with what you discover.
The Journey Can Continue.
The Institute can be experienced as leadership development and can also become the beginning of deeper individual or organizational capacity building.
OAR Leadership Institute™
Experience the structured leadership curriculum, activities, assessments, guided reflection and development of an individual leadership plan.
Executive Coaching
Participants seeking an additional level of individualized development may continue through executive coaching focused on leadership, decisions, purpose, performance, relationships and application.
Train-the-Trainer Development
FFCA also offers distinct facilitator-development pathways for organizations and professionals seeking deeper preparation to carry selected learning forward within their own environments.
Every Activity Is One Stroke of the Oar.
Below you will find activities from the OAR Leadership Institute™. They are important—but they are still only individual movements across much larger waters.
Combined with assessment, reflection, facilitation, application, leadership planning and continued development, they are designed to do something more than create temporary motivation.
The goal is to create movement that lasts—to strengthen the individual, influence how we lead, inspire what becomes possible, and move the needle toward sustainable growth.
The Water Is Ahead. The OAR Is in Your Hands.
Explore the activities below. Ask the questions. Sit with the answers. Write. Reflect. Challenge yourself. And remember: you do not have to see the entire shoreline before you begin rowing toward the leader you are becoming.
Program Overview

OAR Leadership Institute™
Leadership Development Begins With the Leader Within.
The OAR Leadership Institute™, developed through the Fathers and Families Coalition of America, approaches leadership from an introspective and strategic perspective. The experience asks participants to look inward, understand how they show up, strengthen how they lead others, and translate discovery into purposeful action.
More Than Leadership Information. A Leadership Development Experience.
Structured around specialized learning modules and the I Am Going Anyway OAR Leadership Institute Manual, the Institute creates space for leaders to examine their strengths, behavioral patterns, emotional intelligence, relationships, values, purpose, vision and responsibility.
The intensive experience is designed for executives, senior managers, managers, emerging leaders, practitioners and professionals who want more than another presentation about leadership. Participants engage the material, reflect upon it, apply it and begin building a leadership strategy connected to who they are and the impact they want to create.
The experience culminates in the development of an individual leadership plan, with an executive coaching component available to help participants move the goals they establish from intention toward implementation.
The Intensive Experience
Reflection Becomes Application.
Why the Experience Goes Deeper
Leadership Development Should Move the Needle.
Motivation can create a moment. Development creates a process. The OAR Leadership Institute™ is designed to help participants move from awareness into application—and from application toward sustained leadership growth.
Develop the Individual
Increase self-awareness, clarify values, examine behavioral patterns and connect personal development with leadership responsibility.
Strengthen the Team
Build relational awareness, communication, emotional intelligence and a greater understanding of how individual leadership influences collective performance.
Increase Leadership Capacity
Move learning beyond the classroom through purposeful goals, practical application, leadership planning and continued development.
Ownership • Accountability • Responsibility
OAR Leadership Institute™ — Building Leaders Who Lead With Love
Discover who you are. Strengthen how you lead. Develop the capacity to influence people, families, teams, organizations and communities with purpose.

FFCA Model: Four-Part Institute
OAR Leadership Institute™ • The FFCA Model
EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL • EVEN MORE PRECIOUS • EVEN MORE RESILIENT • EVEN MORE PRESENT
The FFCA Model
Leadership development is not about becoming someone else. It is about discovering more of who you are, understanding how you affect the people around you, strengthening the capacities already within you, and becoming more intentional about the leader you choose to be.
The Goal Is Not Perfection. The Goal Is Development.
The competency-based curriculum of the OAR Leadership Institute™ focuses on developing leadership capacity, fostering meaningful relationships and strengthening emotional intelligence. It integrates applied knowledge, reflection and leadership-development practices for people working with families, children, organizations and communities.
Recognize strengths, possibilities and the experiences that have helped shape the person and leader you are continuing to become.
Examine values, relationships, purpose and the importance of recognizing the human worth within ourselves and within the people we lead and serve.
Develop the capacity to navigate adversity, uncertainty, change and difficult waters without losing sight of direction, responsibility or possibility.
Strengthen awareness, emotional intelligence, listening, relationships and the intentional presence required to lead people—not simply manage outcomes.
The Four-Part Institute
From Understanding Yourself to Creating Your Leadership Legacy
The FFCA Four-Part Institute creates a dynamic progression from self-awareness to leadership application. Each component asks participants to examine a different dimension of how they understand themselves, relate to others and translate leadership concepts into practice.
DiSC and Leadership
Using Your Personality Strengths for Succeeding in Your Leadership Style. Explore behavioral tendencies, communication patterns and the ways individual differences can influence relationships, teams and leadership effectiveness.
The Pinnacle of the Pyramid: Building Blocks of Success
Examine the values, habits and personal disciplines connected to self-leadership while considering how character, responsibility and intentional development contribute to leadership growth.
A New Story — Positive Goal Setting for Leadership Legacy
Move beyond short-term motivation and begin creating a personal and professional leadership vision. Participants explore where they are, where they want to go and what intentional action can help move them toward that future.
Responding Leadership Through Increased Emotional Intelligence
Strengthen emotional awareness and relational leadership effectiveness by examining how emotions, reactions, communication and presence influence the people around us.
Development Over Momentary Motivation
Insight Matters When It Begins to Change What We Do.
The Institute is designed to move leadership learning beyond inspiration alone and toward reflection, application and intentional development.
Pulling It All Together
Closing Leadership Development Plan
The learning is brought together through an actionable leadership-development process aligned with individual purpose, growth and professional goals.
Because the Question Is Not Only: What Did You Learn?
The deeper question is: What will you do with what you have learned?
The Institute culminates with Pulling It All Together — Closing Leadership Development Plan , where participants synthesize their learning and begin translating insight into an actionable plan aligned with their purpose and professional goals.
This is where introspection meets action. Awareness becomes intentionality. Goals become commitments. Leadership becomes something participants continue to practice after the Institute has ended.
The FFCA Model
Even More Beautiful. Even More Precious. Even More Resilient. Even More Present.
OAR Leadership Institute™ — advancing leadership through introspection, relationships, emotional intelligence, purpose and action.
The FFCA Framework of New Leadership Development

Are You Ready to Jump Into a New Destiny?
Leadership development is not simply about learning another technique. It begins with the willingness to discover who you are, examine how you lead, understand how you affect others, and intentionally decide who you are becoming.
Leadership Begins With the Leader Within.
The OAR Leadership Institute™ brings together behavioral insight, emotional intelligence, purpose, goal setting, relationships, reflection and practical application. Rather than treating these as disconnected leadership topics, the Institute integrates them into a developmental journey.
Participants engage in guided self-exploration and collaborative learning to better understand their leadership strengths, growth opportunities, behavioral patterns, relationships, values, purpose and direction.
The philosophy is simple but demanding: insight matters, but insight alone is not enough. Leadership development becomes meaningful when what we discover about ourselves influences how we respond, how we relate to others, how we make decisions, and how we move forward.
This is why OAR stands for Ownership • Accountability • Responsibility. We can examine our story without being imprisoned by it. We can recognize our patterns without being defined by them. And we can take responsibility for what comes next.
From Self-Awareness to Intentional Leadership
Each module builds upon the one before it—moving from understanding yourself toward purpose, healthier relationships, leadership application and the legacy you are intentionally creating.
Understanding Yourself Better to Understand Others
DiSC Personality Training
Leadership begins with self-awareness. Participants explore behavioral preferences, communication patterns, strengths and relational dynamics to better understand both themselves and the people they lead, serve and work alongside.
The Pinnacle of the Pyramid — Building Blocks of Success
Leadership is developed through more than position or title. Participants examine the values, behaviors, disciplines and character foundations that influence how leadership is practiced over time.
The emphasis moves from simply asking “What do I want to accomplish?” toward asking “What kind of leader am I becoming?”
Developing a New Story
Positive Goal Setting Blended With Ikigai-Informed Approaches
Participants explore vision, meaning, direction, purpose and possibility. The work invites leaders to examine where they have been while intentionally considering where they are going and what they want their leadership to contribute.
Healthier Relationships
Emotional Intelligence Training
Leadership happens in relationship with other people. Participants examine emotional awareness, response, empathy, communication and relational effectiveness while considering how healthier leaders can contribute to healthier teams, organizations, families and communities.
Reflection Must Eventually Become Application.
The activities, assessments and conversations are not intended to remain on a page. Participants are challenged to consider what their discoveries mean for their decisions, relationships, teams, goals and everyday leadership behavior.
Motivation Should Move the Needle.
Inspiration can begin the journey. Sustainable development requires reflection, practice, intentionality and continued movement. OAR invites participants to move beyond a momentary experience and begin carrying what they discover into the way they actually live and lead.
A New Destiny Is Not Something We Simply Wait to Discover. It Is Something We Intentionally Move Toward.
Courage asks us to move. Integrity asks us to remain grounded. Compassion reminds us that leadership is ultimately about people. Purpose gives direction to the journey.
And sometimes leadership begins with a decision that sounds remarkably simple: I Am Going Anyway.
Jump Into A New Destiny

Leadership Development Activities & Workbook Highlights
This Is Where Reflection Becomes Leadership Practice.
The activities and workbook experiences of the OAR Leadership Institute™ are not designed simply to give you something to complete. They are designed to help you discover, reflect, understand, apply, develop, lead and become.
Here, the Workbook is not an assignment —
it is an altar.
Here, each page is not a task —
it is a carving of the blade of your oar.
Here, each word you write is
a stroke into new waters.
You do not check a box —
you forge a legacy.
The Work Is Designed Not Simply to Instruct — But to Awaken.
Leadership Development Activities & Workbook Highlights are crafted to move you from reflection into purpose, from awareness into application, and from being a bystander to becoming a leader whose very life can become part of the lesson.
See Yourself More Clearly
Explore behavioral patterns, strengths, values, relationships, emotional awareness, purpose and the experiences that have helped shape the leader you are today.
Move Insight Into Practice
Reflection becomes more meaningful when it begins to influence choices, communication, relationships, goals, responses and everyday leadership behavior.
Intentionally Craft Your Legacy
Leadership development is not only about what you know. It is also about who you are becoming and what your leadership leaves behind in the lives of others.
This Is Where Iron Sharpens Iron.
Within this Institute, these activities become your forge. The place where leaders are not simply appointed, but developed.
It is a place for reflection, challenge, conversation, practice and growth—the place where the I Am Going Anyway™ spirit begins moving from a phrase into an ethos.
Activities That Ask You to Do More Than Complete a Page
Each activity serves a different developmental purpose. Together, they create opportunities to examine the past, understand the present, imagine what is possible and intentionally move toward the leader you choose to become.
“I Am”
Your opening invocation. You will write it. You will own it. You will live it. The activity begins with identity because leadership begins before the title.
DiSC Personality & Emotional Intelligence Assessments
Not merely to be analyzed, but to be understood and applied—to understand yourself more deeply so that you can begin to understand others with greater awareness, curiosity and compassion.
Victory Statements & Audio Flashcard Practices
You will use your own voice to identify and reinforce triumphs, truths, strengths and possibilities that may once have been doubted, minimized or forgotten.
Leadership Development Plan Components
A map of who you are becoming and a working blueprint for the legacy you are building—moving reflection toward intentional leadership action.
Meet Me in Ten Years Vision Planning
You will write as if the decade is already yours. Because if you cannot envision where you are going, how will you begin intentionally rowing toward it?
Life Wheel & Ikigai Diagram Creation
Explore the intersection of life satisfaction, meaning, passion, purpose, vocation and profession while examining where greater alignment may be needed.
Emotional Intelligence & Mindfulness Journaling
The space where stillness meets strategy. Where reaction can become response. Where awareness can become wisdom—and where the leader learns to notice before automatically acting.
New Story of You & Compassionate Leadership Exercises
You will begin scripting a new narrative—not as fiction, but as an intentional forecast of the leader you choose to become and the difference you want that leadership to make.
The Page Is Only the Beginning.
Leadership Is a Practice Before It Becomes a Legacy.
Leadership is not given — it is grown.
Authority is not taken — it is earned.
Legacy is not spoken — it is lived.
The OAR Is in Your Hands.
The Workbook is your companion.
The Institute is your community.
The Purpose Within is your guide.
The waters ahead are unknown. You may not always see the shoreline. You may not know everything the journey will require of you.
But leadership does not always wait for certainty. Sometimes purpose asks us to begin rowing.
I Am… I Am… I Am Going Anyway.
Module One — Measurable Activities

Understanding Yourself Better to Understand Others
Before you can lead them — you gotta
know you.
Before you tell somebody how to build a bridge —
you gotta build your own foundation.
Before the Strategy. Before the Title. Meet Yourself.
Module One begins with an intentional examination of how you naturally move through the world, how others may experience you, what strengthens you, what can challenge you, and what all of that means for the way you lead.
In the OAR Leadership Institute™, we do not simply discuss theories—we live this work. Every page you touch, every question you answer, every insight you claim can become another brick in the leadership legacy you are building.
Porque, mi gente, leadership is not just about the suit. It is about the corazón. The alma. It is about aligning mind, meaning, behavior, relationships and purpose.
Module One is the deep dive. You are about to meet you on a different level—not simply to describe who you are, but to decide what you will do with what you discover.
Behavioral Insight
Begin with the DiSC assessment. Explore how you approach people, challenges, pace, communication and environments. The goal is not to place yourself inside a box. It is to create language for patterns you can examine, understand and intentionally use.
Understanding Others
Self-awareness becomes more powerful when it creates greater awareness of other people. Understanding your own tendencies can help you approach differences with greater curiosity, flexibility, empathy and compassion.
What Will You Discover About Yourself?
Module One moves beyond simply receiving an assessment result. Participants examine patterns, environments, values, relationships and leadership dimensions—and then begin translating those discoveries into intentional development.
Your DiSC Behavioral Profile
Look in the mirror. Explore how you move, communicate, respond and engage with the world around you.
Eight Leadership Personality Dimensions
Explore Pioneering, Energizing, Affirming, Inclusive, Humble, Deliberate, Resolute and Commanding dimensions and consider when different approaches may be useful in leadership.
Natural & Adaptive Behavior
We all adapt. Explore when you feel most natural, when circumstances call for adjustment, and how to adapt intentionally without losing connection to who you are.
Your Ideal Environment
Identify the conditions where you are most likely to flourish, contribute and grow. Stop assuming every environment brings out the best in every person.
Core Values
Identify the values you want reflected in your leadership and examine whether your everyday decisions actually align with what you say matters.
Relationship Blockers
Examine behaviors, assumptions and patterns that may interfere with connection, communication or trust. Greater awareness creates an opportunity to choose a healthier response.
Strengthening Every Dimension
Awareness is not enough. Consider how you can intentionally strengthen the behaviors and capacities that may not come as naturally to you.
Barriers & Growth Opportunities
Name what can get in your way. Own what belongs to you. Then identify practical ways to move through barriers rather than allowing them to quietly direct your leadership.
We Are About Action.
Knowing your style is useful. Understanding your patterns is valuable. But development begins when you decide what you will do with what you now know. Module One moves participants from insight toward intentional leadership practice.
Your Leadership Development Plan Begins Here.
Not somebody else's template. Not somebody else's definition of success. Module One asks you to begin identifying what development means for you and how you will remain accountable to it.
Leadership Plan
Begin developing a plan grounded in your story, your discoveries, your values, your growth opportunities and your direction.
Victory Statements
Use your own voice to capture meaningful truths, accomplishments, strengths and commitments that reinforce the development you are intentionally pursuing.
Mentors & Accountability
Identify the people who can challenge, encourage, mentor and hold you accountable. You are not rowing this boat alone. No leader does.
Barriers
List the barriers that could interrupt your growth. Name them honestly. Then determine what you can influence, change, navigate or approach differently.
Success Markers
How will you know you are growing? Leadership development is not always measured by the title, position or paycheck. Define meaningful indicators that you can actually recognize.
Pulling It Together
Reflect. Connect. Integrate. Then project forward. Consider who you are becoming and what intentional action needs to happen next.
Who Are You Becoming Now?
In our Pulling It Together process, participants reflect, connect and begin projecting forward from what they have discovered.
Module One is not simply the first class in a sequence. It is an opportunity to break some things down, build some things up, and begin rowing forward with an oar increasingly shaped by your own awareness, choices and intentional development.
Know Yourself. Understand Others. Then Decide How You Will Lead.
This is leadership for the heart-led, the street-wise, the spirit-strong and the life-educated.
Your experiences matter. Your story matters. What you choose to do with them matters even more.
Let's go.
I Am… I Am… I Am Going Anyway.
OAR Leadership Institute™ — Built from La Cultura, The Block, and the Heart
Climbing to Success

Module Two — The Pinnacle of the Pyramid Building Blocks of Success
The Pinnacle of the Pyramid — Building Blocks of Success
You do not simply climb a Pyramid of Success. You build it—one block at a time. And the materials you bring to that construction include your experiences, your values, your relationships, your discipline, your culture, your learning and the person you are intentionally becoming.
Leadership Has History. Leadership Has Culture. Leadership Has Character.
Module Two asks participants to examine success not simply as achievement, position or recognition, but as something constructed through values, behaviors, relationships, discipline and repeated choices.
Ahora escucha… when we say “Building Blocks of Success,” we are not just talking PowerPoint slides.
We are talking mortar and brick. We are talking stories of resilience. We are talking about the way Mami could stir the pot with one hand and somehow help fix life with the other. We are talking lived wisdom, the grit of the block, lessons learned through adversity—and yes, the precision and discipline of scholarship.
Because leadership development does not require us to abandon where we come from in order to honor what we have learned. We can bring lived experience and disciplined learning to the same table.
Leadership With Sofrito AND Citations.
Your leadership does not have to become culturally empty in order to become intellectually rigorous. Your lived experience does not disappear because you study theory, research or evidence.
Module Two invites participants to bring their whole selves into the developmental process: culture and scholarship, heart and intellect, experience and evidence, story and strategy.
We Are Asking Who You Will Become.
Success Is Built Through Practice.
Each block invites reflection on a quality that can influence leadership. The objective is not simply to recognize the words, but to examine how these qualities show up in your decisions, relationships, habits, challenges and everyday leadership.
Confidence
Believe in your capacity while remaining open to learning, feedback and continued growth.
Skill
Raw talent may be a gift. Refining it is a responsibility.
Team-Spirit
Leadership is rarely a solo journey. Learn how your presence contributes to the people rowing beside you.
Poise
Practice steadiness and intentional response when pressure, uncertainty or emotion enters the room.
Condition
Leadership requires endurance. Consider the physical, emotional and mental practices that help you remain prepared.
Competitive Greatness
Be ready when your best is required. Challenge yourself to grow without allowing comparison to define your worth.
Industriousness
Put in the work. Sustainable leadership is strengthened through preparation, effort, consistency and practice.
Loyalty
Examine what it means to remain faithful to your values, commitments, people and purpose while still exercising sound judgment.
Alertness
Pay attention. Observe what is happening around you and within you before automatically reacting.
Initiative
Step forward when action is needed. Leadership often requires movement before somebody hands you permission.
Enthusiasm
Energy influences environments. Bring authentic engagement and purpose to the people and work entrusted to you.
Self-Control
Do not allow another person's behavior to write your story through your reaction. Awareness creates room for response.
Friendship
Leadership is relational. Genuine connection, trust and mutual respect matter beyond transactions or titles.
Cooperation
Practice unity over unnecessary ego and shared purpose over the need to own every spotlight.
Intentness
Know your direction. Stay connected to your purpose and keep rowing toward it with intentionality.
What Does Success Mean in Your Life?
Module Two turns the building blocks inward. Participants write, reflect and examine how success, adversity, purpose, love, relationships and integrity are expressed in their own leadership.
Your Definition of Success
Define success for yourself rather than allowing position, comparison or somebody else's expectations to define it for you.
Pressure & Purpose
Examine the pressures and adversities that have challenged you, refined you or revealed something important about who you are.
The Passion You Will Not Surrender
Identify what continues to call you forward even when leadership becomes difficult, inconvenient or uncertain.
Leadership by Love
Consider how dignity, compassion, accountability and genuine concern for people are visible in the way you actually lead.
Team-Spirit
Examine what you contribute to a team when nobody is applauding, measuring or watching.
Integrity
Explore the values you carry into rooms where nobody else can make the decision for you.
Create Your Own Code of Conduct.
Not the organization's Code of Conduct. Your Code of Conduct.
What standards will guide you when nobody is monitoring you? What values will remain when leadership becomes uncomfortable? What boundaries will protect your integrity? What commitments will govern how you treat people, exercise authority and respond to adversity?
A personal leadership code moves values from something we admire into something we intentionally practice.
Bring Your Whole Self Into Alignment.
At the end of Module Two, we are not simply pulling together notes. We are examining character, adversity, culture, learning, relationships, purpose and the leadership choices that distinguish who we are becoming.
You do not have to choose between where you come from and what you have learned. You can bring both.
Success Must Eventually Become Visible in Practice.
The goal is not merely to know the building blocks. The deeper challenge is to embody them consistently enough that other people can experience them in the way you live, serve and lead.
Build a Leadership Foundation That Actually Belongs to You.
When you step out of Module Two, the invitation is not simply to understand success.
Walk it. Serve it. Teach it. Live it.
And yes—we should be able to smell the sofrito in the way you lead and recognize disciplined learning in the way you serve.
Bring your story. Bring your scholarship. Bring your culture. Bring your character. Bring your whole self.
Because leadership does not require you to erase one part of yourself to develop another.
I Am… I Am… I Am Going Anyway.
Module Three — Developing a New Story — Positive Goal Setting Blended with Ikigai Approaches
The Sun Never Sets On Leaders of Excellence

The Sun Never Sets on Excellence
Excellence is not one destination, one achievement, one title or one moment in the sun. It is the continuing decision to grow, align, refine, contribute and become.
Some of Us Rode Waves Long Before We Ever Saw the Ocean.
Waves of struggle. Waves of pain. Waves of uncertainty. Waves of hope.
And now, in Module Three, we begin learning how to read the currents of our lives with greater intentionality—to establish goals not only from the mind, but also from meaning, values, purpose and the future we are intentionally creating.
We draw from the vineyard of life that has aged us, challenged us and taught us—and ask how those experiences can now pour wisdom into our leadership.
Your Past Can Inform Your Story Without Owning Your Future.
Positive goal setting is not about pretending the past never happened. It is about deciding what meaning you will carry forward, what needs to be released, what needs to be cultivated and where you intend to go next.
Wherever Your Leadership Story Began, Vision Can Give It Direction.
Leadership development does not belong to one zip code, one university, one profession or one kind of life story. What matters here is the willingness to examine where you have been and intentionally consider where you are going.
Lived Experience
Whether your lessons began on the streets of Southeast San Diego or another community that taught you resilience, those experiences can become part of the wisdom you carry forward.
Seasons & Patience
Whether you have watched the sun settle over vineyards or learned elsewhere that worthwhile growth requires seasons, patience has something to teach leadership.
Learning & Wisdom
Whether your education came through universities, professional preparation, mentors, work, adversity or the hard-earned degrees of life—this is your opportunity to put learning in service of purpose.
Vision With Purpose. Goals With Meaning.
These activities invite participants to explore alignment, life satisfaction, meaning, healing, future vision and the barriers that may stand between intention and action.
Create Your Ikigai Diagram
Explore questions of meaning, passion, contribution, vocation and direction. Where do important parts of your life intersect—and where might greater alignment be possible?
Map Your Life Wheel
Examine important areas of life satisfaction. What feels strong? What needs tending? What has been neglected? Where do you want to invest greater attention and intention?
Engage in Kintsukuroi-Informed Reflection
Honor the experiences that have left marks on your story. Consider how adversity, repair, learning and growth can become visible parts of the wisdom you carry forward.
Success Starts With Self
Use intentional journaling and reflection to notice what strengthens your energy, what diminishes it and what helps you reconnect leadership with meaning and purpose.
Meet Me in Ten Years
Write toward the person you are becoming. Not simply as fantasy, but as a deliberate exploration of vision, direction, choices, relationships, contribution and legacy.
Address What Holds You Back
Waves will come. Identify barriers, fears, patterns and circumstances that may interfere with movement—and consider how you can navigate them with greater awareness, grace and grit.
The Cracks Can Become Part of the Story.
Kintsukuroi offers a powerful metaphor for this work: repair does not always require hiding what has happened. Sometimes the places where life challenged us can become visible reminders of adaptation, learning, resilience and growth.
The invitation is not to romanticize adversity. It is to ask a different question: What wisdom, strength, compassion or purpose can I carry forward from what I have lived?
Meet Me in Ten Years.
Imagine meeting the future version of yourself a decade from now. Not merely what that person owns or what title appears beside their name—but how they live, how they lead, who they love, how they serve and what their presence contributes to other people.
Then bring the future back to today. What choices begin now?
Excellence Is a Continuing Practice.
Goals matter, but Module Three is not only about reaching them. It is about becoming increasingly intentional about the life and leadership those goals are helping you create.
Let Your Leadership Open Over Time.
Like a fine Merlot, your leadership is meant to open over time.
Let it breathe. Let it deepen. Let experience add character. Let reflection add wisdom. Let purpose give it direction.
Then pour what you have learned richly into the lives of the people you serve.
In the OAR Leadership Institute™, we do not set goals simply to achieve. We set goals to become.
We lead with the wisdom of the waves.
We lead with the resilience of the vineyard.
We lead with the courage to rise, fall, learn,
rise again—and pour that legacy forward.
I Am… I Am… I Am Going Anyway.
Leadership by Love

Module Four — Responding Leadership Through Increased Emotional Intelligence
Leadership by Love: Why Should Leaders Walk in the Philosophy of High-Road Leadership or Leadership by Love?
Leadership is not only about what you know, what you accomplish or how many people report to you. The closing question is more personal: What do people experience because you are their leader?
One of My Favorite Leadership Reflections
“I will not like you all the same, but I will love you all the same.”
— Favorite Coach John Wooden maxim used within the OAR Leadership Institute™
I ask about this in every class because the word love can make leaders uncomfortable. It challenges us to think beyond authority, performance and organizational charts and to consider dignity, responsibility, service, care, accountability and how we choose to treat people.
“I Don't Have to Love My Staff.”
I have heard people respond:
Those reactions are exactly why the question matters. Leadership by love does not mean abandoning standards, boundaries or accountability. It asks whether we can hold people accountable while still recognizing their dignity and humanity.
Before Leadership Becomes Relational, It Is Personal.
This is the heart of the closing module. We examine emotional intelligence not as a line on a résumé, but as part of how we understand ourselves, regulate ourselves, relate to others and respond when leadership becomes difficult.
Leaders—it is time to vibe different. Love different. Lead different.
It is time to lead from the inside out because organizations do not need leaders performing authenticity. People need leaders who can be present, grounded, accountable, curious, compassionate and courageous.
Not only in boardrooms, but in living rooms. Not only in strategy sessions, but in difficult conversations. Not only on the stage, but when nobody is applauding.
Leadership is not only about power. It is also about presence.
Awareness Must Eventually Become Response.
Participants explore emotional intelligence through assessment, reflection, mindfulness, relational awareness and practical application.
Two EQ Perspectives
Explore emotional intelligence through Goleman-informed and Bar-On-informed perspectives to examine strengths and areas for continued development.
Mindfulness
Practice creating space between stimulus and response. Centering can help leaders move from automatic reactivity toward intentional response.
Kintsukuroi Reflection
Examine how healing, adaptation and lessons from difficult experiences may inform the wisdom you carry into leadership.
The New Story of You
What remains unwritten? What is being restored? What deserves protection from outside noise? What story are you choosing to write now?
Compassion & Curiosity
Explore what changes when judgment is interrupted by curiosity and when compassion is paired with clear expectations and boundaries.
Relational Mastery
Move beyond understanding emotion toward strengthening communication, trust, collaboration and the quality of relationships.
What Is Driving the Leader?
Whole leadership asks us to look beneath behavior. Our needs can influence decisions, relationships, reactions, motivation and the meaning we attach to leadership experiences.
Security
Stability, safety and a sense of grounding in purpose.
Belongingness
Connection, inclusion and meaningful participation with others.
Love
Compassion, care and human connection expressed through action.
Freedom
Agency, choice and the ability to move toward intentional growth.
Novelty
Curiosity, openness, discovery and willingness to experience something new.
Self-Esteem
Confidence and a sense of worth that does not depend entirely on comparison.
Self-Actualization
Continuing to become more fully who we are called and capable of becoming.
Meaning. Integrity. Love. GRIT.
The culminating framework invites leaders to consider development through four interconnected lenses rather than treating leadership as a single skill or personality trait.
Meaning
What gives direction to your leadership? What human needs, purpose and contribution are beneath the work?
Integrity
What principles govern your decisions when taking the high road is more difficult than taking the convenient road?
Love
How do care, dignity, service, respect and accountability become visible in the way you lead people?
GRIT
What deserves your sustained effort, courage, resilience and perseverance over time?
Integrity Becomes Visible Through Choices.
High-road leadership asks what our choices communicate about character, trust, responsibility and how we use influence when another path might be easier.
Love Does Not Remove Accountability. It Changes How We Carry It.
In this framework, love is not sentimentality. It is expressed through the daily virtues and behaviors that influence whether people experience leadership as dignifying, developmental and trustworthy.
What Still Deserves Your GRIT?
Leadership by love is not passive. Some commitments require sustained effort, courage, resilience and the willingness to continue developing long after the excitement of beginning has disappeared.
Release. Strengthen. Declare.
The final development work requires more than collecting ideas. It asks participants to decide what they are prepared to release, what they will strengthen and how they intend to lead differently.
Release
Identify one old leadership habit, reaction or pattern you are ready to release.
Strengthen
Identify one need, virtue, capacity or leadership trait that deserves intentional development.
Declare
Complete the commitment: “I will lead with ______.”
Before You Lead Outward, Make Space to Listen Inward.
There are moments in leadership when another strategy is not what we need first. We need enough stillness to breathe, reflect, notice and reconnect.
Let me think of life for a moment while I breathe. Let me rest within and hear the sounds of being whole.
Whole leadership asks us to consider the relationship among mind, emotion, behavior, body, meaning, relationships and the deeper purpose that calls us beyond ourselves.
Development Across the Whole Person.
The closing experience brings leadership development back to the whole person. The goal is not simply behavior change. It is deeper awareness, emotional development, intentional action, meaning, contribution and transcendence beyond self.
Psychological Development
Examine thought, perception, identity, self-awareness and the internal narratives that influence leadership.
Emotional Development
Strengthen awareness, regulation, empathy, compassion and the capacity to respond intentionally.
Behavioral Transformation
Translate insight into observable choices, practices, habits, relationships and leadership behavior.
Noological Transcendence
Explore meaning, purpose, contribution and the possibility of directing leadership toward something larger than oneself.
Your Leadership Does Not End With You.
How you lead can ripple through relationships, systems and generations. Influence can create trust. Trust can support action. Action can create impact. Impact can contribute to legacy.
Move Different. Lead Different.
This is where the Institute comes back together: self-awareness, emotional intelligence, relationships, meaning, integrity, love, perseverance, purpose and intentional leadership.
Speak with greater intention and more weight.
Love louder—but with wisdom and boundaries.
Lead stronger—but with humility.
Hold people accountable without surrendering their dignity.
And remember: Emotional intelligence is not a section on your résumé. It is something people experience in your presence.
Leadership by Love Begins Within— But It Was Never Meant to End There.
Lead with presence.
Lead with grace.
Lead with integrity.
Lead with courage.
Lead with service.
Lead with LOVE.
Know yourself so you can better understand others.
Build your character so success has a foundation.
Set your direction so purpose has somewhere to move.
Lead by love so your influence becomes service, your service becomes impact, and your impact can become legacy.
True leadership is not measured only by position. It can be seen in influence, service, responsibility, humility and the willingness to develop others and contribute to something larger than oneself.
